Parts of the immune system & how it works
Foreign substances that enter the body are called Antigens. When the antigen enters the body, the immune system identifies it and interferes with its function. This process happens in our body unconsciously.
The white blood cells, also called Leukocytes (LOO-koh-site), are the main contributors to this process. These are the immune system’s cells, and there are two primary components. The first type is called Neutrophil (NOO-truh-fil), and the other type is Lymphocyte (LIM-fuh-cytes). Each kind has a specific function.
“Neutrophils,” the first of these, provides an immediate response to an infection. In the case of an infection, neutrophils are warned by a specific chemical compound in the body. Then Neutrophils travel through the bloodstream to the desired location and block the invading particles. These cells account for 55 – 70 percent of the total white blood cell count. The lifespan of each neutrophil is less than a day, so bone marrow continually produces new neutrophils.
The second primary type, which is Lymphocyte, has two other subtypes. Those are T-lymphocyte and B-lymphocyte.
T-lymphocytes are also known as T cells. They are originated in the bone marrow and grow up in the thymus. If simply explain the function of the T cells, they can act against body cells that have already been infected by a pathogen. They also have the capability of working against cancer cells.
B-lymphocyte the second subtype of lymphocytes, which also plays a significant role in protecting the human body from infections. These are also called B cells. In a virus or bacteria infection, B cells become plasma cells that produce antibodies to fight them. Antibodies are a type of protein produced by those transformed plasma cells. These proteins act to block the invasion of human body cells by pathogens. They can also kill those invading pathogens. These antibodies last a long time in the body. Therefore, they remember past infections and go to a quick action if the body re-infect with an antigen. So, these B cells play a significant role, like security soldiers in the human body.
